Junior Boys - Red
Thanks to readers of this li’l blog who don’t give a toss about hockey for bearing with me during my recent fangirlishness wrt the Carolina Hurricanes. Shortly after I finished watching the Canes’ lovely win over Boston (during which Matt Cullen scored a goal that I’m sure was just for me) on the big screen at the back of the Cats Cradle, the Junior Boys took the stage. A rapturous dance party followed. This was the third time they’ve been to NC and the third time I’ve seen them here. Rapturous dance parties, every one.

Cullen’s line comes in for the post-score group hug.
We had awesome seats for game 3 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals - right up against the glass. Sitting up that close in the charged environment of a playoff game was insane. (Unfortunately, what it’s like in there after they actually win such a game will still be left up to my imgination.) Rather suprisingly, the RBC Center allows dSLRs, so I got a bunch of photos — click through for the rest.

Bright Young Things @ Slim’s, Raleigh NC.
Went out to the Bowerbirds/Bright Young Things show last night. Show was great — BYT play a very enjoyable brand of soulful power-pop, and I expect they’ll be very buzzy once their record comes out. Bowerbirds played as a four-piece, with former Ticonderogan Wes adding some killer bass lines and BYT singer Matt adding some lovely drums. They played a bunch of new stuff, which sounded very good, and announced that they’ve got a new record out on July 7. Yay!
By the way, this was my first time at Slim’s, and it’s a miserably smoky, cramped place. Bleh.

Last week I was on a cruise ship in the Caribbean, sailing with a handful of rock bands and a bunch of devoted fans of the Barenaked Ladies. They had invited the Mountain Goats (and the Weakerthans and Christine Fellows, yay!) to play their cruise, Ships & Dip V, and graciously extended the invitation (and free cruise fare) to spouses and significant others as well. It was a great time, and an invaluable opportunity to spend time with some of my favorite musicians and friends.
Came home to a 72 degree February day in NC, considerably warmer than the blustery day we spent on Key West. It’s been over 48 hours since I’ve been off the boat and I still feel like the ground is gently rocking beneath me.
